Stitching My Way Out of a Corner

4/9/18
Just got back from a 3 day workshop with Paula Kovarik at the Greenville Arms in the Hudson River Valley. A great group of women, many different viewpoints. And so much laughter!

The workshop was an exploration of line and pattern. At first glance, it may not seem like Paula’s linear style meshes with my crazy color and collage style. One of the things I want to amp up is the line quality in my quilting. The quilting gets lost unless the viewer is close up. The great thing about this class was that not only was there the inspiration of Paula’s work, but all the students were skilled quilters and all were ready to try something new. There was something to learn from each person in the class.

To start with we used heavier thread (40 ct.) than I have ever used in my machine. I even tried 30 ct. thread. The thicker thread required some tension adjustments. Luckily, I was sitting across from Cheryl who knew so much about thread. My bobbin needed loosening. I tend to sew fast because I use an expressive line when I quilt. Cheryl helped me make adjustments to accommodate my frenetic stitching. But, I also took note how her slow and steady stitching staved off a lot of problems.

At first, I was not sure how the ideas from this workshop were going to advance my work on the quilt for the Explorations exhibit. Stitching is not the technique I am highlighting. But, as my frustration with a particular piece grew I decided to attack it with the rotary cutter. As I rearranged the pieces one piece grew into two and then morphed into a diptych. Suddenly, there was the shape of the Explorations piece. Time for some more cutting and printing.
